Leif Garrett

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

It was around 1979 and I couldn’t wait for issues of 16 Magazine to hit the stands. My favorite rock band KISS was almost always on the cover and there were articles and pinups throughout. Also in every issue were the likes of Sean Cassidy, Kristy McNichol, the Bay City Rollers, The Dukes of Hazzard, and a young man with wavy blond locks and a baby face named Leif Garrett. I had absolutely no idea what Leif did – or how to say his name. (It’s not pronounced like leaf, it’s said like laif.) After all, I wasn’t actually sixteen; I was merely approaching eight years old. So the allure of most of these teen idols completely escaped me. After all, They didn’t seem to wear make-up, spit blood, or breathe fire.

Miss Beadle

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

It’s kind of hard to believe that the roles for which Charlotte Stewart is best known are so diametrically opposed. I knew her best for her sensitive portrayal of Miss Beadle, the teacher of the Ingalls sisters in Little House on the Prairie. She came across as the type of teacher that you would want for your children, kind-hearted, caring, but stern enough to keep them on task. Calling Doctor Bombay!

Calling Dr. Bombay!   Emergency! Come right away! I need a picture with you! It’s hard to believe that I had been in the presence of Bernard Fox twice already, but had never gotten a photo with him. It is also a bit ironic that of the three signed photos that I have of Bernard Fox, none of them are of him in what was possibly his most famous role, the warlock physician Dr. Bombay on Bewitched. He appeared in 18 episodes in this role (plus once in another part), later reprising it for the short-lived spin-off series Tabitha. The fact that I don’t own a signed photo from this series might give you some indication of how many important roles Bernard Fox has played. Read the rest of this entry »

Go Home and Get Your Shine Box

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Those were the words that I was hoping not to hear when I approached Frank Vincent at the Chicago Hollywood Celebrities Show on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Because this might mean that I was about to be whacked for even thinking about asking for a deal. Vincent’s  looks and voice just ooze quintessential gangster in such films as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino – all classic Martin Scorsese films starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. In two out of the three, Mr. Pesci makes mince meat out of Frank Vincent, but in the third one, the tables are turned and Vincent destroys Pesci with a baseball bat. I had just one question to ask: did the two of them get along in real life? Read the rest of this entry »
