The Little Brown Rocking Chair

Here is a brief reminiscence about a small rocking chair I once had. This small wooden chair was given to me sometime around the middle of the 1970’s decade. No one seems to remember where exactly it came from – possibly from my parents or Grandma Range as a Christmas gift – but I know that I spent many a happy a moment in it, parked in front of the TV, watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoons like Land of the Lost and The Monster Squad or sitcoms like Shields and Yarnell and Gilligan’s Island. Here are the remaining two (out of six) postcards that my Grandpa wrote to my Grandma during his 1937 excursion to Colorado before they were married. The first one was written on Monday, August 16 and mailed from Golden. Here he mentions seeing Buffalo Bill’s gravesite. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one in the family who is interested in ‘famous graves’. The second and final card, describes the experience of going up into Pikes Peak.
Here are the next two postcards in this series from my Grandpa’s trip through Colorado in 1937 that were written the Summer before he married my Grandma. The first one was written on Sunday, August 15 after touring through Boulder. The second was written first thing Monday morning once he had arrived in Estes Park. My Grandpa’s brother Virgil was accompanying him on this trip through Colorado, and I’m betting it would have been a fun trip to be on.
I’ve always loved looking at old postcards. The pastel-like painted colors and the fountain-tip pen scrawl across the flip side – if the card happened to be filled out – both ring incredibly nostalgic. It’s also cool to think about someone’s vacation and what was going on in their lives nearly 70 years ago.
