I always thought that my Mom’s immediate family typified the All-American family unit. Her parents’ marriage endured until death did them part, her siblings remained close into their adult years, and all of their children became friends as we continue to see each other at all the major holidays…and often outside of them. At right is a photo of Dad with his 1954 Hudson Hornet. He purchased this car in the Fall of 2001, drove it for a while after getting it up and running, and then spent two years meticulously restoring it to its nearly-original form (and color). He and Vicki have won ample awards showing this car at various exclusive car shows in the area, namely the prestigious Concours d’Elegance shows, since he completed restoration in the Summer of 2004. This year alone, they took Best in Class at the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance in Cincinnati and Second in Class at the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance in Lexington, Kentucky.
My Dad was obviously quite into baseball as he wandered through his pre-teen years. He had quite a vintage baseball card collection, which he still has today – and is probably quite valuable. He also fancied himself a ball player and sometime around 1960 these great photos of him playing baseball with his Dad were snapped. And as today is his 60th birthday, I thought it appropriate to share them. His parents obviously thought these pictures were keepers because they had them printed up in nice, glorious black and white 5 x 7 prints.
I can’t tell you the exact day, month, or even year I realized this – but pretty much from the beginning, I realized that my Dad liked cars. The origins of his fascination with classic automobiles can certainly be traced back to his childhood. But my childhood knowledge of his vehicular obsession can only be traced back to about 1975 – when he made his first classic car purchase during my lifetime: the blue 1949 Super-Six Hudson.
