The Starers

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

img043.jpgIt’s funny to watch the evolution of a kid’s reactions to Santa. The first one is usually utter terror. My first shots of Ashleigh with Santa showcase a bawling mass of quivering baby. By the second or third year, there is usually rapt fascination with this jolly, bearded legend. Then follows pure euphoria at the prospect of telling Santa what you want for Christmas. Children learn fast that Santa is their bread and butter when it comes to receiving gifts on Christmas morning. Then once a child learns the truth about Santa, they leave him in the dust, embarrassed to even be near him. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas Tree

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

xmx.jpgI am endlessly fascinated by nostalgic photographs depicting my family at Christmas. Not only the ones with me in them, but also snapshots that include my parents and relatives…well, heck anyone who stood in front of a tree in the fifties or sixties is alright with me – especially trees in your traditional white or silver variations. An Arline and Carl Christmas

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

slide.jpgEven if you don’t know Arline and Carl, you should appreciate these two photos from my vintage slides series. However, I do know them so they are even more special to me. Arline is my Dad’s first cousin, the daughter of Bessie, my Grandma Range’s sister. Carl, of course was her husband. He passed away in 1994. The little boy in the photos is their only son John Shirk. The bottom photo was taken in 1959 and the top one presumedly in 1960. These photos emit a strong sense of nostalgic Christmas’ past. We still see Arline often, especially around the holidays.

A Fresh New Haircut

Friday, November 17th, 2006

img500nu.jpgI’m not really sure why my Grandpa F decided to snap these two photos of people getting their hair cut, but I’m glad he did. I guess this proves that we share the same blood. At left is my Grandma getting her new ‘do’ in 1961 from Mrs. Happensack, the neighbor across the street. Below are two shots of my Dad, the first showing him getting his hair cut by his Uncle Joe in November 1958. He was the husband of my Grandma’s sister Bessie. Below that is the aftermath of said haircut. Read the rest of this entry »
