Captain Kangaroo

Like most kids, I loved the daily kid shows that were on in my pre-school days. Local show Uncle Al was probably my favorite with a close second by nationally syndicated Captain Kangaroo. His real name was Bob Keeshan and he had a show from 1955-84 on the CBS network. That’s quite a long haul. I remember Mr. Greenjeans and that bizarre moose that hung out with him. Since it had been eight years since I had been in California, obviously it had been eight years since I had been to Disneyland. Thursday, October 6, 2005 would mark my fourth visit to the park. This would also be my first time to Disney’s California Adventure which had opened in 2001 – built in the former Disneyland parking lot. Jimmy and I woke up that morning, had a bite to eat, and then made a brief pit stop elsewhere in San Pedro.
The centerpiece and reason for the trip Chris and I took to Savannah was the St. Patrick’s Day parade held on Friday, March 14. For some unknown reason, this particular parade in Savannah had become one of the biggest in America to celebrate the holiday, equalling, if not surpassing, the magnitude of the parades in Chicago and New York. Although, the winding, twisting streets made it difficult to maneuver many giant floats around the squares, it was still an excellent parade lasting over three hours.
It is amazing what can be accompished in just one week. I like trips that are so busy that they seem to go on forever. Not always relaxing, but definitely more rewarding. It is kind of odd to put it into terms like this, but on the morning of Saturday, March 29, 2008, I had not yet visited Texas. I had never been to Dallas, Fort Worth, Crawford, Waco, College Station, Huntsville, Houston, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Uvalde, Johnson City, Stonewall, Bonham, Denison, or Parker. And now just one week later I have seen all of these places. Pretty amazing.
