I can’t say that I honestly knew who Cora Sue Collins was, but before even meeting her, I was very impressed with her acting résumé. I hadn’t yet seen a single film in which she had appeared, but as Oscar nominees or obvious classics, I knew that one day I’d get around to checking them out and then I’d regret not having obtained a signature of this former child actress. Among these credits were Smilin’ Through, Naughty Marietta, The Scarlet Letter, Anna Karenina, Johnny Doughboy, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

I wasn’t quite sure what picture I was going to choose when I got the chance to meet her at the Hollywood Show on April 2, 2011. But upon perusal of her photos, it became glaringly obvious which one I was going to choose: a brilliant shot of her with three fellow child actors, who just happened to be Mickey Rooney, Jackie Cooper, and Freddie Bartholomew. I snatched this one up and ignored the fact that she had brought her dog with her.

I could think of nothing more apropos than for her to add the inscription: “The Gang’s All Here.” I wish I had come upon this photo years ago and would have been able to get Cooper and Rooney on it as well.

  1. She had her dog with her? I’d think the poor pooch would have been very nervous with all the people wandering around.
