loisn.jpgAs my one of my idols Jerry Seinfeld does, I have a healthy obsession with the Man of Steel. I like all things Superman. I collect the TV shows, movies, and cartoons. I even like the comic books although I haven’t really delved into collecting them – but I am fascinated with the legend. So naturally, being an avid autograph collector, I’ve made it my goal to get a signature from whomever I can associated with the legendary superhero, some of course being easier to obtain than others.

There were actually two actresses portraying Lois Lane during the late 1940’s and the early 1950’s within the three mediums that Superman was starring in at that time. Noel Neill, it may be argued, was the original Lois Lane. She started the legend off on film in the chapter series Superman (1948) and Atom Man Vs. Superman (1950). In addition, she starred in the bulk of the TV series The Adventures of Superman, appearing in seasons 2 – 6. This encompassed all of the most commonly seen color episodes.

She was also the first autograph in the Superman vein that I requested and received through the mail. She signed and returned the photo below for me on March 29, 1986 as a result of a request I had made not long before – on March 10. She also signed two notecards.

I did not get a chance to actually meet Ms. Neill until I ran into her at the October 2005 Hollywood Collectors Show. While most stars were selling signed photos for $20, she offered something a bit more substantial for the same amount: a nice oversized book (seen at the top of the posting) called Truth, Justice, & The American Way: The Life and Tiems of Noel Neill, the Original Lois Lane. Long title, but very nice book, even if you’re only into it for the many pictures. And of course she signed it, adding the notation “Lois Lane.”

Naturally, I requested a photo with Noel Neill, who was still looking cute in her Superman garb. The result is below…
