Movies do not get much more odd – or memorable – than A Clockwork Orange. Ive seen it several times, and each time come away more disturbed than the last time. The principal actor in the film is Malcolm McDowell who plays the youthful and violent Alex, whose crimes lead to a prosecution and eventual sensitization to violent acts (the tongs that keep his eyes open have forever haunted me). It ends up coming back around to bite him when he is unable to defend himself once he becomes the victim of crimes similar to the ones that he had previously perpetrated. Sound fun?

It’s not. But it’s a move hard to look away from. Because of the memorable nature of the film, I had always wanted to meet Mr. McDowell, but had missed previous personal appearances that he had made. My chance to meet him came unexpectedly when he appeared at the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention in Chicago on Sunday, August 14, 2011.

I think he had more photos available than any other celebrity I’ve ever seen, including Robert Blake and Sid Haig (who incidentally, was sitting right next to him at this event). They spanned his career in films and television that took him through such works as Star Trek Generations, Heroes, the re-tooled Halloween films, Disney’s Bolt, and as the narrator for The Compleat Beatles.

As with all of the other celebrities of this particular show, he wasn’t charging extra for a photo with him (and it boggled my mind to see so many people not getting photos with him). He was quite friendly and happily posed for a picture behind his table.

I really wanted to investigate if those tongs had left any marks on his eyelids – but I refrained.

This concludes the celebrities of the Flashback Weekend. Return to the show here
