I skipped the continental breakfast at our comfortable Super 8 motel in Monterey on the morning of Monday, June 14, 2010 – opting instead to chat online with Erin for a bit while Bob gathered his morsels. We didn’t have to get up too terribly early that day as the cemetery in town that we were going to visit didn’t open until 8:30am. It was the Cementerio El Encinal (or Cemetery of Many Oaks). We weren’t visiting any graves here. We were dropping off. Not a body, but a marker. Bob had spearheaded some fund raising to put a stone on the unmarked grave of Viola Richard. You may not know that he had roles in Sesame Street. You may not recall his recurring part in E.R. You may not know that he was the voice of Ling in Disney’s animated classic Mulan (and the direct-t0-video sequel Mulan II). In fact you probably don’t even know that his name is Gedde Watanabe. Indian Lake 2010

It’s never fun returning from vacation, but this one was a bit crummier than normal. We had had a water heater issue while I was gone that had to be addressed first thing the Sunday night of my return. Namely, we had no hot water. Ashleigh only had to deal with it for the first part of the week, before taking off on her own road trip to Chicago and Denver. She had her friend Jamey come to take care of the cats. So on Monday, June 21, 2010, I had to be late to work on my first day back while getting Korrect Plumbing to replace the thermocouple. And would you believe that I had another water heater issue later in the week? They had to return on Thursday to replace the expansion tank that was causing water to constantly run into the overspill pan. Short version: I was $245 poorer after the first week home.
