Brad Alone: Lost in New York

ny29The title is mostly meant for comedic effect. I never really got lost and I was only alone for about three hours. But the key point is that I had become comfortable enough with Manhattan and the subway system to strike out on my own and hit a few sites on the morning of Thursday, May 30, 2013, our last full day in New York City. Bob had opted out of hitting the streets for more of my brisk walking, so after I spent a rather slow and leisurely morning in the hotel room, I headed out a little before 11am for a few hours on my own. Non-Ewings from Dallas

dallas4I’ve had one of those lifelong flirtations with the TV series Dallas for many years now. I’ve amassed quite a few celebrity encounters from the show – including two of its top stars Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy – and have even visited the actual Southfork Ranch as seen throughout the series. And I’ve done all of this without ever actually sitting down to watch an episode of the show. Oh sure, it was on in my household now and then as my Mom was taken in by this nighttime soap, and as I’ve mentioned before, even I remember the excitement surrounding the whole “Who Shot J.R.” conundrum. So through all of this, I’ve come to recognize that Dallas is more than a TV show, and has moved into the realm of an institution. Read the rest of this entry »

The End of the Road: Salem and Boston

sa21Bob and I had been on the road for two full weeks, weaving throughout the New England states and east border of New York state, but it was nearly time for the road trip portion of our journey to come to an end. We awoke in Salem, Massachusetts on the morning of Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the Clipper Ship Inn. We weren’t in a tremendous hurry that morning, and didn’t get out of our motel until around 9:30am.
