Fort Sumter ’07
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007
Following our jaunt through Charleston on March 22, 2007, Mom, Denise, Ashleigh, Adam, and I boarded a boat that took us on a 45-minute journey terminating on the island where Fort Sumter is located. This, of course, is the site of the first battle of the Civil War which began on April 12, 1861. Here the Confederacy forced out the Union army stationed in the fort. It was a lovely day to browse the remains of this historic location. Read the rest of this entry »
I decided that I would like to incorporate some of my famous ‘sightseeing-vacation’ tendencies with the ‘relaxing-vacation’ theme of our trip to Myrtle Beach. In other words, I wanted to get out and actually do something – and visit a place where I could actually purchase a magnet or two to put on my refrigerator! So I talked my Mom and Denise into taking a trek into Charleston on Thursday, March 22. We got a relatively late start on Thursday morning, so after the ninety-minute drive to Charleston it was about 11:30am when we arrived. Mom, Denise, Ashleigh, Adam, and I made the trek. The Eds had other plans, mostly shopping for toys.
Bob and I set out for Nevada at an ungodly hour on Saturday morning, February 10. I had been up for 24 hours straight the day before and had only gotten about four hours sleep, and yet we were up ready to face the day and our strict schedule at 6:00 am. It was about a four hour drive from Bob’s house in San Bernardino to the Hoover Dam. We quickly stopped off for my favorite ham and swiss pastry that I get whenever I’m there and we headed out.
Although it would not have been my first choice of places to spend our last full day of the 15th International Sons of the Desert Convention, I did enjoy our day at the Stone Mountain amusement park in Atlanta, Georgia. We had nearly had our fill of long bus rides as we boarded yet another one to transport us from Augusta to Georgia. Also on the down side was the fact that Bob had to depart that afternoon for his trip to South Africa and the Wileys opted not to go on the trip since Jimmy was not feeling up to a day in the hot sun. He had braved most of the convention despite undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma, but understandably sat out this day, and avoided the hot sun.
Following our daylong trip to Savannah (which followed two trips to Plains and Americus and one to Warm Springs), Ashleigh and I were pleased to be able to take a few hours of our Georgia trip to just sleep in, relax, swim, and take in a few sights leisurely.
