Rolfe Sedan 1980

Rolfe Sedan had an extremely distiguished career as a character actor playing more than 250 different roles from the early 1920’s to the late 1970’s in both film and telelvision. Among his most notable roles was his role as Mr. Beasley the postman on The George Burns – Gracie Allen Show, but what really piqued my interest was his role as a hotel desk clerk in the Laurel and Hardy classic Double Whoopee in 1929. I didn’t expect to have any more celebrity encounters this late in the year, but when Bob sent me an email and the subject was “Caroline Kennedy book signing get your ass there!” – I knew that I better make my best effort to cross paths with her. Caroline is of course the daughter and only remaining living child of President John F. Kennedy. She lived in the White House from just after her third birthday until just after her sixth – when her father was assassinated in Dallas. She herself went on to become a successful attorney and author, and I might I add, quite a natural beauty.
It was a distinct privilege to be able to meet Lucille Hardy Price, the widow of one of my two biggest idols, Oliver Hardy. I can’t say that I really ever got the chance to know her, as she passed away in 1986 before I had thrust myself into interviewing and getting to know some of the celebrites who worked with Laurel and Hardy and in the Our Gang Comedies. But I feel as if I am very acquainted with her because of the many interviews with her that I have read and seen, as well as first-hand accounts from many of my friends who certainly did know her.
I may not have ever seen one single solitary episode of Dennis the Menace in my entire life, but I certainly know an iconic television show when hear about it. That’s why I had no qualms about shelling out twenty bucks or so to have my friend Bob Satterfield pick me up the photo at left that had been signed by Jay North and Jeannie Russell – that is Dennis Mitchell and Margaret Wade from the classic series – when they were making a joint appearance at one of the Hollywood Collectors Shows.
