Little Joey Lawrence No More

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

I’ve thus far done quite a bit of complaining about the celebrities at the Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago whom I got the chance to meet on August 11, 2012. When it was Joey Lawrence’s chance to meet me, I only had one complaint really. He was too bronze. That is to say, I was okay with paying the $40 autograph fee (which although high, was at least in the correct stratosphere), and I was very happy that this included a free photo with him, but it just didn’t look like the Joey Lawrence whom I used to know. Connecticut and the Coolidge Detour

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

Bob and I began our sixth day of travel through New England on the morning of Monday, July 9, 2012, at the Comfort Suites in Norwich, Connecticut. We had a nice breakfast and then headed toward our first destination of the day, the Trumbull Cemetery in Lebanon, Connecticut, about 2o minutes north of our hotel. This is the final resting place of Declaration of Independence signer William Williams, not to be confused with any of the other dozen or so famous William Williams throughout history. This one had been elected to the Continental Congress to replace Oliver Wolcott, and although he arrived too late to actually vote for it, he became a signatory of the Declaration on behalf of the state of Connecticut. Yeoman Janice Rand, Fifth Beatle of Star Trek

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

You’ve heard of the so-called Fifth Beatle, a designation that could be shared by any number of individuals (but hopefully not Yoko) who weren’t part of the crux of the Fab Four, but may have been right on the cusp. The first would have been Majel Barrett, who portrayed Nurse Christine Chapel in 34 episodes of the series. The second would be Grace Lee Whitney, who portrayed Yeoman Janice Rand. Calvin Coolidge and Me

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Calvin Coolidge was our nation’s 30th President, serving from 1923 through 1929 during a time of great prosperity in our country. Some criticize his notion of small government and laissez-faire ideology as leading to the Great Depression which then ensued in the 1930s after he had left office. Although highly skilled at giving speeches during his Presidential campaigns and press conferences, he was known as “Silent Cal” for his dour, stiff disposition and quiet personality at social events. Some speculate that this was part of an act to give the public what they wanted. Others think that his sadness grew out of the death of his son, who died from blood poisoning after getting a blister while playing tennis at the White House. Read the rest of this entry »

Lynn Borden and Hazel’s Tail End

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

So many sitcoms, so little time. Sigh. I mention this because I know it’s going to be quite some time before I ever getting around to viewing the sitcom Hazel, which ran for five seasons from 1961-1966. It will be even longer until I’d get to the fifth season of it, if in fact it ever gets released on DVD (the fourth is scheduled for later in 2012). Of interest in the aforementioned fifth and final season is that this was when Lynn Borden became a regular cast member. Read the rest of this entry »
