The Fall Holidays of ’77

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

77aAlong with the start of my kindergarten year came the Fall of 1977. Within this time frame fell my sixth birthday, Trick or Treat, and Thanksgiving – all of which would be enjoyed for the very last time during our occupancy of the house on Echo Hill. Arriving first was the big birthday party. My actual birthday fell on Sunday, October 2 – so my party was doubtlessly that day or the day before. This was most likely the first time that I had friends (rather than just family) to my party. Clearly, I hadn’t made many new friends in Kindergarten class yet as the only ‘outsiders’ were neighbor kids. Read the rest of this entry »

Missy Fodor: Still With That Great Laugh

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

missy2I was a little skeptical about requesting Missy Fodor as a friend on Facebook when I first saw her on there. Afterall, she may have remembered what an upstart and troublemaker I had been at times throughout my formative years at Fairbrook Elementary, Ankeney Junior High, and Beavercreek High School and decided to deny me! We had attended every school year together with the exception of  our senior year at BHS – twelve years in all. So over the years we had crossed paths many times. Read the rest of this entry »

Kindergarten Begins

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

kin2sOn September 9, 1977, the day finally came to embark on my educational journey as I trudged off to my first day of kindergarten class. You might recall that since my birthday was October 2, I had just missed the September 30 deadline to enroll in school the previous year. When my Mom went to have me tested to get me in early, I cried when she left me there. This was something that I had never done before and would never do again. I often wonder what ramifications it may have had to my life had I not cried that day. Read the rest of this entry »

Peddling Through the Summer of 1977

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

77d.jpgAfter returning from my fabulous Disney World / Florida vacation in early June, I was left with a whole Summer of nothing to do. Well, that’s not exactly true. First of all, I immediately set about creating my masterpiece epic novel about Disney World (described slightly more in depth in the previous posting), and other useless arts and crafts (as seen above). My classes had ended at Hope Nursery School and Mom wasn’t working in order to take care of Denise. So it was truly a Summer of lingering around the neighborhood, pestering Denise, playing in the kiddie pool in our backyard, visiting with Andrea, and getting into mischief. And of course there were my afternoon friends Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and Zoom airing consecutively on PBS. Read the rest of this entry »

Who Was That Masked Man?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

loneranger2.jpgAutographs…celebrity encounters…so where did it all begin for me? Sometime during the Summer of 1977, I met my first real celebrity and obtained my first real autograph (discounting two sports autographs that I already owned: the autographed baseball from Hall of Famer Bob Feller that I received when I was born from June Bolin, one of my Dad’s co-workers…and the signed paper photo of Bengal Isaac Curtis that I got when I was about two when he did a personal appearance at a local store). This mystery masked celebrity was none other than Clayton Moore, star of TV’s classic western The Lone Ranger. Read the rest of this entry »
