"Hey, I'm smokin' in any jacket." - Sam Malone, "Cheers"

We’ve all loved David Spade in his deliciously snide roles in Saturday Night Live and Just Shoot Me. We’ve laughed with him for his wry, pessimistic, and wonderfully sarcastic roles opposite Chris Farley in the classic Tommy Boy and Black Sheep. But what do you suppose Mr. Spade would be like in real life? Surely the snippiness is all just an act, right? Well, I think I can answer that question based on the ten seconds I had with him on Saturday, April 4, 2010.

While waiting for our table at the legendary Musso and Frank Grill on Hollywood Boulevard, my friend David tapped me on the shoulder and nodded toward a short gentleman making his way into the lobby with a girl on each arm. Many times I do not recognize a celebrity when they are standing right in front of me, but there was no mistaking David Spade. He looked grumpy.

I handed Bob the camera and leaned toward David Spade and in a soft voice I asked him if it would be okay if I got a picture with him. I must give credit where credit is due here because he did not say no. He gave a bit of a disgusted look and nodded that he would begrudgingly tolerate this. So I stepped next to him, and Bob snapped the photo. Spade put up the ‘peace out’ signal with his fingers, barely having enough interest to look at the camera. Bob told him that we were going to ‘tag team’ and jumped next to him and I took a picture of them. Spade was even less interested in the second photo.

In a way it was poetic justice that I had always enjoyed David Spade’s condescending attitute and now he was employing it on me. It’s kind of like being insulted by Don Rickles, only much, much less thrilling. But again, I have to express my appreciation that, on his night out with the bitches, he tolerated us at all.
