"Is this a musical table?" - Paul, "Flirting with Disaster"

atkins2The title of this posting quotes the reply given by Jason Bateman, starring as Matthew Burton, in an episode of the greatest sitcom of all time It’s Your Move. The response is spoken when Stacey Hall, object of Matt’s affection who is annoyed by his frequent advances, asks him point blank “What do you want??” In a typical bold move on my part, this has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of this posting, save for the fact that it mentions The Blue Lagoon, the starring vehicle for the final celebrity in the long stream of postings highlighting the celebrities whom I met at the October 2008 Hollywood Collectors Show in Burbank, California.

In fact, The Blue Lagoon (1980) has been the only movie that I have seen which starred Christopher Atkins. Another fairly famous film in which he starred was The Pirate Movie alongside Kristy McNichol. In this film he continued his legacy of appearing shirtless with those smoldering curly locks. Of course, after that his career was all but washed up, if you’ll pardon the expression. He drifted into cable and made-for-TV movies and appeared completely nude in Playgirl. Of note, he did reunite once with his Blue Lagoon co-star in an episode of her show Suddenly Susan.

Since he was somewhat of a teen idol of the early 1980’s, I had Bob pick me up a signed photo of Christopher Atkins when he appeared at a Hollywood Collectors Show – and since I had already had his signature on the photo above, I asked him to pose for a photo with me when he returned to the show on Sunday, October 5, 2008 (he was only there on Sunday), making him the last all-new celebrity encounter of the show.

He was very cordial and willing to pose for a free picture when he saw that I had already purchased one in the past. I did my best to steer clear of the full-frontal photos he was selling. Now what would one do with something like that?
