I crossed the Florida border for the second time during the Summer of 1990 on August 12. This time I was traveling with Christi, her parents Bob and Joy, her brother Eric, and of course, our little Ashleigh. We were headed to the Florida panhandle for a weeklong vacation on the white beaches of Destin. While there, we met up with other members of Christi’s family, Joy’s sister Bonnie and her husband Don, as well as their three sons Donnie, J.J, and Sean.
Strangely I have very little recollection of most of the events of this trip. I know we stayed in a condo on the beach, most likely the four-story seen in a shot below, and I remember swimming in the pool and ocean and watching a movie about the Holocaust. I also recall that I brought along my Bible, still being read from my pre-camp cramming. That’s it. Photos indicate that we went to Sea World – although I cannot be certain exactly what I did throughout the entire trip because I am in NONE of the photos that I have borrowed from Joy. But I swear I was there!

In more vivid memories, I do remember that at the tail end of the trip, we stayed in Alabamba with Joy’s sister Joanne for at least one day and night. In addition, her other sister Jane stayed over there with her daughter Jennifer. We also crossed into Georgia to visit with yet another sister named June. What I recall with certainty is that we all sat around Joanne’s kitchen table late into the night chatting while I chain smoked cigarettes. Before we went to bed, Joy, Jane, and Jennifer decided that Jennifer would be coming back with Christi’s family to stay with them for a while. There would be plenty of room in the car since I would not be coming back with them.

On Saturday morning August 18, Joy and Christi drove me to the bus station in Columbus, Georgia where I caught a bus to Macon. There I met my Mom and family and I headed back into Florida for the third time in 1990.
