cre1You can’t get through life with as wacked-out of a sense of humor as mine without seeing and laughing at the occasional Monty Python film. So while meeting Terry Jones was not the sole reason that I went all the way to Detroit, Michigan for the Motor City Comic Con on May 14, 2016, his presence there certainly sweetened the pot.

I’d classify Terry Jones primarily as a writer and director within the Monty Python comedy troupe, having served as co-director with Terry Gilliam on the unmatched classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, he served as sole director on The Life of Brian and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. However, to me the proverbial ‘holy grail’ of Python skits has to be the utterly disgusting and offensive skit involving the world’s fattest man Mr. Creosote… and the guy playing Creosote behind all of that hideous makeup was none other than Terry Jones.

As in The Meaning of Life, he also played multiple roles in The Holy Grail and Life of Brian, as he would throughout his time in Monty Python. Additionally he played Mr. Toad in the film version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and made appearances on Saturday Night Live and in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Still I wouldn’t have recognized him on the street since he was no longer hidden under the garish makeup he often wore and he had aged a few decades since Monty Python’s heyday… so I had to take everyone’s word for it that he was in fact Terry Jones. Admittedly, it would have been nice to get a nice autographed 8×10 photo of Terry Jones as Creosote, but it wasn’t worth $40 to me, but it was most certainly worth the $20 for a photo op with him.

He was kind enough to pose with me and then let Carolyn into a photo as well. The guy taking it covered the flash with his finger for one of the shots and I corrected him, adding in a “Bring me a bucket”, one of Creosote’s famous lines (just before he sends forth projectile vomit into it). It got a laugh, which is no stranger than the skit itself getting multiple ones..

So now I can cross yet another fine actor off of my ‘bucket’ list.
