cc2I’ll be quite honest in confessing that until the movie The Runaways came out in 2010, I had never heard of the namesake band. It’s a little surprising considering that both Lita Ford and Joan Jett got their start in this little girl hard rock band from the late 1970’s. However, I’m not surprised that I don’t remember them from that time period as they never really took off in America, the way some of them did as solo artists. The lead vocalist from the band was Cherie Currie, who joined the group in 1975 at the age of fifteen.

As for the movie, it received lots of acclaim. Based on Cherie Currie’s memoirs, the film starred Dakota Fanning portraying Cherie (along with Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford). In fact, when I met Scout, I had her sign a photo from this film rather than Halloween.

But now for another confession: I still haven’t seen the movie nor heard a song from The Runaways. However, I understand the pop culture significance of the band and on the strength of that, I listed Cherie Currie as a must-meet when she appeared at the Days of the Dead show in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 28, 2014.

As I was attempting to curtail some of the spending on celebrities which has recently skyrocketed out of control, I only went for the $10 photo op and bypassed the $25 autograph. This was a much cheaper way to complete my encounter, and although one day I may regret it, right now I’m just as happy to have the photo with this somewhat iconic rock singer. She was quite nice and friendly and posed for a free photo with Carolyn as well.

UPDATE: Carolyn and I both met Cherie Currie again at the Chiller Theatre event on April 23, 2016. My friend Dave Chasteen sent along a photo for me to have her sign and it came with a free pic. At the time, I couldn’t recall if Carolyn had met her before, so I let her get the picture. Then she agreed to do another one with me, so I went ahead and took advantage of that as well. Such a nice and attractive woman.

Celebrity encounters from the 2014 Indianapolis Days of the Dead will continue
