"Mom said I had sedunctive hearing. Can you die from that?" - Briana Pond

When I met Sherman Hemsley back in 2005, I had already missed my opportunities to meet Isabel Sanford (Weezy) and Roxie Roker (Helen Willis). Isabel had passed away in 2004 and Roxie had died in 1995. But since that meeting, a good portion of the cast of The Jeffersons also left us: Mike Evans (the original Lionel), Franklin Cover (Tom Willis), and Paul Benedict (Bentley). Keeping this in mine, I was thrilled that I was able pick up meetings and photos with two more cast members at the Hollywood Show on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

I had already obtained autographs from both Marla Gibbs, who played the irascible maid Florence (and then went onto a five year stint on the TV sitcom 227), and Ned Wertimer, who played Ralph, the doorman who was always looking for a tip. Ned had been a staple character actor on sitcoms throughout the 60’s and 70’s before settling into this memorable role. They had both done appearances at collectors shows in the late 90’s, and Bob had picked up the signed photos seen here.

Both of them were exceptionally kind and let me get pictures with them individually, and in addition, I was able to finagle a great picture with both of them together. Unlike their characters, Marla Gibbs didn’t snap at me, and Ned Wertimer didn’t expect any money (despite the great hand-out pose he conjured up).

Long live The Jeffersons!!
